Dear Readers and faithful friends,

After a number of years of wonderful blogging, this blog has effectively become dormant - except for occasional updates regarding my book, MAXDOG. I have left this blog as a legacy to my dog and a place of sanctuary where we can reflect upon his life. Take your time, peruse the pages spanning Max's 18 months in cyberspace. Feel refreshed and uplifted because his story is an amazing one of..."LIVING LIFE TO THE MAX!"
My activities have now moved on to my new blog entitled "LIVING LIFE TO THE MAX". Please join me there where you can read about my family and canine companions. I also invite you to visit MAXDOG's FANPAGE on FACEBOOK. You can follow the specific links by clicking below:

HERITAGE DAY!

mmmWOOF!
GREETINGS FROM SOUTH AFRICA!
and....
HAPPY HERITAGE DAY!!!

Each year on the 24th September, us SOUTH AFRICANS celebrate our heritage.

It is a public holiday here, so we get to sleep in late

(amongst other things!)

You might ask...

WHAT do we celebrate?
HOW do we celebrate?

We celebrate and showcase our beautiful country with all its magnificent scenery!

We celebrate our wild life...our fauna & flora...and the incredible diversity which this country protects.

We celebrate our
R A I N B O W N A T I O N:
The diversity of our people, our languages and our cultures!
Did you know that SOUTH AFRICA has
ELEVEN OFFICIAL LANGUAGES!?
We celebrate the enormous array of Traditional crafts...

...and each year, since 2007, HERITAGE DAY has ALSO become
NATIONAL BRAAI DAY!
Throughout the way there will be wafting smoke in the air with mouthwatering aromas of grilling meat.
There will be music, laughter and partying!

(Some of us DOGS will just have to watch!)

But there will be food...lots of it!
Mom has decided to give you the recipe for our
TRADITIONAL MELKTERT
(Traditional milk tart)

MELKTERT

2 cups flour
½ cup sugar
125g margarine
Pinch of salt
2 teaspoons Baking powder
1 egg

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg, flour, baking powder and salt. Mix well. Press into 2 pie plates and cook for 10 mins.

FILLING

4 cups milk
2 ½ Tablespoons flour
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon margarine
2 ½ Tablespoons corn four(thickening agent)
2 eggs
Vanilla to taste

Boil milk and margarine. Mix the rest of the ingredients to a smooth paste and add to boiling milk. Return to the heat and stir until thick. Pour into pie shells and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Please let us know if you make it, intend to make it or what it tasted like!

---XxX---
...and the MAXDOG?

...I will sleep off my day!
ENJOY YOUR DAY!!!
Lots of licks

Gee, Max, that last picture is rather incriminating. Ask your Mom please if American Corn Starch is the same as what is in your recipe. Hope you have a great holiday.

Hey there M&M
I am sure that ANY corn starch will do...it is merely to thicken the 'custard', so I am sure that even ordinary flour in it's place is also good (Obviously that would then mean that you double the flour quantity) Enjoy! Please let me know how it turned out...we have been baking this end too.

Happy Heritage Day Max! There sure is a lot to celebrate, no wonder you were tired at the end of the day. The recipe looks delicious but we have to wait until it cools down to make it...no ovens on when the AC is on here, LOL!

Mom says this was a WONDERFUL post with so much to see and learn about! We think so to... especially that custard-like pie which we will be working on Mom to make since it looks like something WE can share with our people (and we get to share most anything they eat that won't hurt us)

Mom was fascinated by that basket the lady was working on. She's done beading and basket making, too at different times and she loves seeing things like that.

Hope the BBQ was good and you had a great Heritage Day! OC and the Country Corgi Crew
