MAXDOG's CHRISTMAS TRIBUTE

UNFORTUNATELY ALL IS NOT OK

Dear friends...

I have always tried to be authentic in my blogs. My personal take on blogging has been to share with my readers the ‘reality’ of my life. I believe that Bloggers who do this bring enrichment to the world at large. Max’s blog is no different.

In the past 18 months, I have sought to bring you the truth about our lives with our animals as well as to imbue the posts with interesting snippets and humour. Had I ignored authenticity, then this blog would have been a total farce. Indeed, because of the truth and honesty in my posts, I have made a number of ‘real’ friends across the globe.

So what happens when there is seriously bad news?

Do we seek to hide it for the sake of appeasing our own need for good, happy news or do we share our pain with the world? Again, I believe strongly that sharing one’s reality has positive consequences...People in general only learn from the trials and tribulations which others face.

Many of you will know that Max had a mast cell tumour removed 2 months ago. We were so blessed with the fact that the surgery had gone well and the tests and abdominal scans gave him the all clear. He had recovered well since then with the scar healing up and him resuming the happy, energetic and playful companion that he has always been.

In the past couple of weeks however, I have noticed changes in him...lethargy, pale gums, going off his food, flatulence and a general restlessness. He has also missed his morning visits to my bedside to check on me and that usually indicates that something is seriously amiss.

Last Monday, my observant Vet felt an enlarged liver but blood tests revealed that all was supposedly fine. He gave Max a course of antibiotics and liver support medication. On Friday last week I felt that there was a small positive change in him but it didn’t last long. On Saturday he seemed worse, so I took him back to the Vet who said we should do another scan.

Max went in for a full abdominal scan yesterday...

The reality is that my boy is gravely ill. From a clear scan two months ago, his liver is now substantially enlarged with what appears to be a very large tumour. He has a lot of fluid build up and things don’t look good at all. The technician and Vet did a number of further tests and have sent 5 slides off to toxicology. The results for those slides will only be back tomorrow evening, but my Vet has prepared me for the worst.

On face value (of the scan and his palpable condition), Max doesn’t have long to live - unless by some miracle we are granted a course of action from the test results. I have been told that we, most likely, will be looking at euthanasia in the not too distant future. In summary, Max’s condition is serious and grave.

I have decided that I am going to share the events with you all as they unfold, in the hope that this will be Max’s gift to the world. He is a great dog with a big heart and an incredible spirit. I am fully aware that he is loved by many of you and that you will also be heartbroken and devastated by this news – like I am. I make no excuses for being totally forthcoming with my blogging friends. Afterall that is what blogging is about.

I ask that you remember Max and us in your prayers.

With love

C

Caryl - our hearts are with you all as you and Max go through this heartache. I thank God for Max, for the amazing dog he is, and for his love for you and the family. We will hold thumbs (and paws) that somehow he is healed.

As owner of a much loved, aging, and weakening dog, I deeply sympathise with what you and Max are going through. And of course, your wonderful writing and photos have meant that I, like may others, feel very attached to your beautiful dog, even though we have never met and touched him.
It is clear that Max always has enjoyed a loving home with you and the best possible care, and that you will make sure that his suffering is minimised.
So while we hope for better news, we also understand that you may soon have to make some very difficult decisions, and want you to know that our thoughts will be with you all the way.
Much love.
Gail (and of course, Hamish)

Oh Dear,
this is all too sad!
My former dog was just the same suddenly in the age of 11. He went peacefully over the Rainbow Bridge by his own will...he was a half Goldie, half Kuvacz! I still miss him and I am still heartbroken.
Now his dad came across with a gullet cancer that is in his liver, too. Life can be very cruel!
We will be thinking of you and you are welcome to our blogs:
www.gizdog.blogspot.com and
www.bea-nype.blogspot.com!
I hope you will be having a few more happy days together. You can give him relief with Rescue Drops and maybe he can relax then...

Mum and I are stunned by your sad and shocking news. It just seems so unfair to have this happen to such a wonderful and friendly woof. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your Mummy and we carry your recovery up to a Higher Power. He knows best, even though humans and puppies do not always understand why things happen.

We hope that there will be good news for you and that you are not in too much discomfort or pain. Please do not give up hope. We really, really care for and love you, Maxdog!!

My bestest Woof to you

Caryl and Max-
So sad to hear your news - from the second I saw the title of your post in the side bar of my blog, I did fear that tough times were coming for you.

Too recently I watched my old terrier weaken and pass. I always worried that I'd balk when the time came... Duncan never had any clinically relevant changes, his body just slowed down more & more. The day my proud, stubborn terrier let me help him up the stairs I knew the time was near. Duncan unmistakably told me on the day that he needed to make his last journey. As much as my heart ached for him, I knew what he needed and was honored to be able to help him pass to a more comfortable place. Being able to say goodbye was such a gift, and I will always treasure my final hours with Duncan as some of the best.

We will be thinking of you all in the upcoming hours and days. No matter how kind fate may be to you, there is never enough time with our loved ones. Max's life sounds like it has certainly been a gift to you, as I'm sure your company has been to him. May his heart will always beat on as part of your own, and the lessons you learned from him make his memory endure.

Godspeed, Max!

Oh no. This is terrible news. We were all very glad to hear that Max was feeling better, so this is a bit of a shock.
I've heard mast cell tumors are very aggressive, and Goldens have been known to get them especially bad.

Words cannot express how sorry I am for you and your family, and of course the Maxdog.

I'll be keeping Max in my thoughts and hoping for some recovery, however unlikely.

It's amazing how close you can become through only a blog!

oh gosh, I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am for you and Max.

Having recently had to go thru this with Sophie KitTON, I know how heartbreaking this kind of news is.

Please know at least one thing. Max has had the most incredible life with you and your family. He has given you many gifts over the years, and while this might be one of the most difficult parts of pet ownership, you will be giving him an incredible gift as well.

Sweet kisses to Max, and big hugs to you and your family during this hard time. I will be keeping him in my thoughts and prayers and hoping, by some miracle, that he will pull thru this.

Dear Caryl and Max,

This is just breaking our hearts. Especially after seeing those lovely photos of Max and his sweet Tammy playing in the deep grass. I've said it before but our dogs are the lucky ones, they have no sense of their mortality and truly live in the moment, savoring every sniff, every kiss until they drift off to sleep.

While I've read so many similar sad tales on these blogs, I must admit that this one truly has tears coursing down my cheeks.

Sadly, it can only be virtually, but please know many arms are around your shoulders and hands are tightly clasping yours as you go through the next few days.

(from the mom of the Beaglebratz) I am sure this news was terribly difficult to share - thank you for doing it - I am so glad you did not try to cover it up. It is so hard to live with a dog who is aging and who has a body that no longer wants to work right - I have done that a few times. I pray that God will hold you & Max in His loving hands and guide you through this difficult time. We can all learn a thing or two from our furry companions - look at life and live it like they do - one day at a time - they know no other.

Caryl and Max. It is with so much sadness that we are writing to say to you, "We are so sorry." We come from a personal, real-life family that loves our doggies every bit as much as any other family member. And we are now part of an internet family that feels the same way for their pets, to the same extent. We know you are part of that constellation. Being so, we love Max and we do understand. And we hope and pray that blessings will surround you as you pass through the next hours and days. We hope and pray that confidence and trust and love will guide you, to make decisions that feel right. And, yes, we'll hope and pray for a miracle - knowing that miracles can take many forms.

It is a sad day for us. Just before learning of Max, we learned that Moma's brother's 20 year old poodle, CoCo, just left for the bridge. Heartbreak surrounds us. And it reminds us of the depth of emotions that families can feel. And share.

Thank you for sharing your life with us. It makes us richer and more blessed.

Devastated? No. We may be crying a bit (a lot) but not devastated. My family and I prefer, for now, to believe in miracles. We're going to wait for the results to see if perhaps based on those, there's a course of therapy that can bet Max feeling better. Frankie, Linguini, the stupid catz, and all of our humans and I will be right here with you--as unrealistic as this may sound. And remember, we trust you parents to make the right decision, whatever that may be. We're all grateful.

In reading your blogs the last little while, we were so concerned that we would read this post. And now, sadly, it is true. Max - and all of your family - we are wishing and hoping for the best of outcomes, for the strength to withstand, and for the comfort of a world of friends.

P.S. - We believe in having fun with our blog, playing around with our blog, but most important, being real with our blog. We support your decision to let us know.

PPS - We just scrolled down to our security word - samint. An "M" (for Max) in saint. We love it.

Oh my goodness - that is awful!! I am sorry - we have not been able to visit our blog friends much due to being so busy with our move over to Brisbane and so I have only just seen this post now...so sorry! I remember the previous scans and how happy you were that Max seemed to be in the clear. What terrible news. Our hearts go out to you - Max is a wonderful, incredible dog- as you say - we all love him. But I know you will always do the best for him and the great blessing with animals is that they don't understand things and only live in the moment, so as long as he feels your love and his family around him, I am sure he feels secure and happy - and will be at peace when it is time to let him go.

I recently did a post about Lemon, our cat who we lost a year ago, and one of the comments left by a visitor really moved me - they said that "death is not the end - it is just another path to be travelled" - and that your beloved pet will always be there, just around the corner, watching over his family.

We are thinking of you from far away.

Love,
Hsin-Yi (& Honey the Great Dane)

We saw this post this morning but were too devastated to post a comment then. We had so hoped that Max was on the mend, so it was hard to see that title of your blog post. Know that we are thinking of you, and praying for you, and hoping you get a little more quality time together before that next hard decision.
