TUESDAY'S TASTE OF SOUTH AFRICA

mmmWOOF!
GREETINGS FROM SOUTH AFRICA
MAXDOG here...

Hello there all my very special furry friends!!!

As you know, on Sunday we participated in the

HOSPICE WALK FOR CHARITY

here in Johannesburg. It was quite hot during the walk and very tiring, so I took Mom's advice and have spent the last day just sleeping it off!!!

Well, my mate, the little 'squirt' - TOFFEE - decided it was a good idea to sleep it off too! (Never mind the fact that he DIDN't participate in the walk!!!)

TOFFEE has now permanently annexed the chair next to Mom's bed!
He feels it gives him 'elevated' status in this house
.....Soooooo NOT TRUE!

Well at least he doesn't bother me when he's sleeping, so I am going to play the "Tour Guide" today and show you a few pictures of some fun things we have seen in the past couple of days in Johannesburg...
This is 'Northcliff hill' - a landmark in our city - with it's water tower on top!

It's JACARANDA season and the Jacaranda trees are ALL in full bloom. Our city is a pretty picture of purple flowering trees!
(Look how 'Northcliff hill' is surrounded by Jacaranda trees!)

Some of the main roads are also lined with these pretty trees!

Here is a little 'makeshift' roadside stall where curios are on sale to tourists.
(Beadwork is a big thing here in South Africa and you will find these types of stalls all over the place!)

Weaving is also popular as a craft!. Here are some
"DOGGIE BASKETS"
on sale at the side of a road.

---xXx---

Another interesting thing happened last evening which disturbed my quiet reverie...
It is 'rainy season' here in South Africa at the moment and that means

RAIN SPIDERS!!!

When it rains, they seek shelter in our houses. Although they are NOT neurotoxic, Mom is a bit freaked out by them. Well, yesterday evening, while Mom was cooking supper, I heard a shriek from the kitchen. Us dogs ran to the kitchen to see what was happening and there she stood, like one of your halloween contraptions...
The spindly dude had casually strolled into her working space. She wasn't impressed at all -stood there all shivering and useless!! Luckily "the Boss" came to the rescue and was about to throw the spindly dude outside, when Mom proclaimed in a broken voice,
"Wait! Flashy beast!"

(Beware...sensitive viewers!!!)

This guys is about 15cm long...rather large I'd say!!!

AND he looks scary too!

Dear friends, will this suffice as our 'Halloween' contribution to bloggie-land?

Well that's all our news for today.
We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to those bloggie friends who have voted for us for the
AWESOME BLOG AWARD!
We really appreciate your support and vote of confidence.
Have a pawsome day!
Lots of licks

Hi there Max! This is Maxx's mommy blogging on behalf of him! Those are very nice pics, the beadworks are brilliant, very artistic! That's a mighty big spider indeed but nevertheless beautiful! Thanks for always sharing your beautiful country through your blog posts!

Cheers,
Mommy & the tanuki

I had to get momma the smelling salts after that spider photo!

Toffee has the right idea. Just thinking about such a long walk would wear me out.

Hi Max! That was a nice for you to walk for the Hospice. You must be exhausted! That spider is so creepy. I would have screamed also! That is just too gross. I hope you win the Dogs with Blogs contest! You certainly deserve the award! Have a great day!

I love the dog baskets. What sort of price would you pay for those & do they come in 'Dane' sizes. Mind you I think my two would chew them.

The spider looks like one we have called a 'Huntsman' creepy but harmless..

ps, meant to say your friend Obi the Dane is absolutely gorgeous. Is he named after the Star Wars character?

Oh my, a 15 cm long spider? That is huge! Yes, that counts as your blog's Halloween decoration!

Seeing spring/summer, with trees in bloom, is lifting my spirits a bit. We have a very big snow storm on the way... We live on opposite poles of the Earth, I guess.

TwoSpecialWires said...

That stack of doggie baskets is an awesome photograph, but somehow we just can't imagine any of your making yourself comfortable in one! Your positions of recline always look like you are sleeping on a cloud. As for Moma ... she said she'd have a bit of trouble sleeping, worrying that one of those spiders'd sit down beside 'er. That picture MORE THAN suffices as a Halloween creepy thing.

Hope your week is going well!

Thanks for the "heads up" on the rain spider! I think I would be checking beds, couches, closets during rainy days if I lived in SA!!

Meanwhile, the Jacaranda trees are just a sight for sore eyes.

And Toffee! What a little sweetheart! Reminds me of a little Maltese we adopted years ago, Stinky. She came to us at age 15 when her mom and dad got into a fatal shooting match (a whole other story). Stinky was going to be taken to the pound but I could not see such an old soul incarcerated at such an advanced age so she lived out the rest of her days at our house in comfort and grand style!

OMG...that thing is SCARY! When it rains here we just get froggies...which I can squish. I'd be scared to squish those things! Geez!

Thanks for coming by! I don't think I have any friends in South Africa, but now I do!

(btw, I may have to send mom there to get me one of those woven doggie baskets, very cool!)

ABBEY:
*Yes, OBI is (apparently) named after "OBI-Kanobi"(sp?).
*The prices of those Dog Baskets ....no idea! Indeed, I don't think I would buy one. Been there! Done that! The dogs LOVE chewing them...or rather - shredding them! But I thought you guys would be interested anyway!

*INA: "Stinky" is an excellent nickname for Toffee...I'll suggest it to Mom...thanks!!!

oh my, that Spider is grOSS!

We were enjoying the photos on your blog until we saw that beauty. Yuk!

Do you have Horse Chestnut trees in S.A.? The best remedy for getting no Spider Visitors, are the Conkers which come from the Horse Chestnut trees in the Autumn.

Not sure if you have them over there of course, but it works here!

We have a conker in every room and no Spider has wanted to come and visit us since then.

Spiders HATE Conkers with a passion.

Pleased to meet you by the way.

We had to scroll quickly past the picture of the s-p-i-d-e-r so mom wouldn't get creeped out. We have some nasty ones here (Black Widow and Brown Recluse come to mind...) but Mom kills them real fast so we have no pix to share. Just as well.
Those Jacaranda trees are gorgeous! Do they have a scent to them?
Toffee is probably just napping out of solidarity. Mighty sweet of him, really.

Hee! Hee! Max - you sleep like I do, with your jowls flopping everywhere!

About your question - I did see your post about your charity walk - I loved it! - in fact, I left a comment about the Dane you met...I hope you saw it? Anyway, I wanted to tell you that our poo does not have to be ginormous...I actually make very little, hard, pellet-like poo now because I am on a raw diet...you would not believe how little comes out! (I would get a picture but I think that would gross out too many readers!) When I was eating kibble, I used to make TONS of disgusting-smelling, sloppy poo but now, I just make small, firm, odourless (yes, really!) poo. This is another reason my humans are convinced of the benefits of the raw diet - because your poo is supposed to be the stuff you cannot digest and get nutrition from, right? So it is interesting that there was so much I couldn't use from the kibble diet but so little waste from the raw diet! (And of course, they are very grateful about not having to deal with huge piles of smelly poo!). Anyway, sorry for such a poo-ey comment (!) but just thought you might be interested...

Slobbers,
Honey the Great Dane

ps. I forgot to tell you - my human, Hsin-Yi, LOVES spiders!! She thinks they are really beautiful and very misunderstood. Once when she was in college (she was doing Zoology) - the spider specialist came to give a talk and at the end of the lecture, she asked if she could hold one of his spiders and he let a tarantula walk up and down her arm...she said it was one of the most amazing experiences of her life and it felt very soft & furry! :-)

MaxDog, you and Toffee really do look pooped-out! I know you and Tammy walked alot in the heat, so where is Tammy napping? Toffee, no comment just hee hee ha ha.

We so love when you play tour guide. The Jacaranda's are beautiful! So very many of them too.

Beautiful spider, glad you just threw spidy out! My Mum tries to do that all the time too. That spider is HUGE!!!! My goodness I cannot get over the size.

In the spring and summer here we get alot of frogs, we enjoy the sounds they make. I like to watch them hop around. I never hurt them because Mom says they help by eating the bugs up!

Well, off to VOTE for you MaxDog. Do you know how often we can vote?

Hugs, Tessa

whoa, Max, that is one nasty-looking spider. Be careful around that thing. We napped a lot here today too. We like to get revved up at night.

Thanks for the nice tour of town - lovely items to see and beautiful trees - what a pretty color. It is always so interesting to learn about new things.
