After a number of years of wonderful blogging, this blog has effectively become dormant - except for occasional updates regarding my book, MAXDOG. I have left this blog as a legacy to my dog and a place of sanctuary where we can reflect upon his life. Take your time, peruse the pages spanning Max's 18 months in cyberspace. Feel refreshed and uplifted because his story is an amazing one of..."LIVING LIFE TO THE MAX!"

WHALE WATCHING!

mmmWOOF!
All photo's in this blog post are courtesy of
Good day to all our furry friends all over the world!
This is a picture of the beautiful coastline near Hermanus...
one of the famous WHALE WATCHING venues in SOUTH AFRICA!

As a self-appointed Tour Guide to our beautiful country, and also because of our concerns about Hamster in this household , we thought we would break out a bit and talk about

MUCH BIGGER things...

WHALES!

oh, how we wish we could take a trip to see them!

Did you know that South Africa is one of the best places in the world to 'Whale watch'?
Yes, we have tourists from all over the globe who come here between May and December for a glimpse of these magnificent creatures. This is something which Mom says is still on her 'to do' list. I personally think they are too big for me to play with.

The above picture is of a whale "breeching". The experts say that they do this either to play, or communicate with other whales or it is a method of getting all the parasites off their massive bodies. Apparently this is an incredible sight to witness. The splashes they make are much, much bigger than the splashes some of our golden retriever buddies make when they jump in the water!

When a whale's tail is out of the water, it is called 'fluking' or 'lobtailing'. Fluking is when they are about to dive deeply whereas 'lobtailing' is when the whale 'pats' the water to make a loud sound. Here too, it is thought to be a form of communication.

THE BIG SPLASH!

BLOWING BIG!

We just thought you guys might like to see these beautiful pictures of some of our fellow warm blooded creatures. Please visit the sites below if you are interested in more interesting facts:

In the meantime, have a wonderful, barkful weekend!
Remember that the world is a much bigger place than we generally think with creatures that we often forget about!

That is amazing! You are fortunate to see those big whales in person.

I am sorry about little Hamster. I hope that you get good information from somebody because we don't know what to do.

I've only seen whales off the coast of Oregon and Alaska.

We have some decent whale watching in this part of the world too, so I've been told, but I've never been lucky enough to see any.

Well, I take that back...I've seen whales at Sea World...does that count?

Awesome pictures! My hoomans have never gone whale watching even though they lived in Iceland and now in the Azores where it's very easy to see whales. Sometimes when we look out from where we live we can see dolphin pods in the ocean. It's always amazing when the ocean reveals some of its secrets to us.

Those are stunningly beautiful photos of incredible mammals! The huge right whales are amazing - the way they seem to "float" on the water. (Just went to Alaska recently and saw several humpbacks) - different than the right whale pix in the Hermanos web pages. Amazing! Thanks for posting!
Hugs xo

Wow Max, great pictures. But they do look a bit scary. Kinda reinforces my prejudice against going in any water that is more that knee deep!
Cheers, H.
PS Thanks for all the tips about plantago - Gail is going to pass them on to her professo, along with your suggestion for improving the experiment!
